CHAPTER 7

RORY

DECEMBER 23RD

I have so many questions.

Did I just abandon my bestie to follow Jake around?

Were they really talking about us at the counter before we arrived, or am I paranoid?

But most importantly…. What the actual fuck am I doing here?

I know Jake has a job to do, but the second I get him alone, we’re having a talk, I’m kissing him more, and after that, I’m out of ideas, so I hope he has some. I know one of my plans includes seeing Tyr, or Tuesday, or whatever, but now that I found Jake again, all I want is to back him in a dark corner and kiss him until I’m drunk on it. This is obviously impulsive Rory talking. I barely know this guy, we haven’t spoken more than a dozen words ever, but it feels like I’ve known him my whole life. He’s all I’ve thought about for months, and he looks better than I remembered. His sandy brown hair is longer, laying in a shaggy mess around his forehead and ears that looks unintentional, but I’m guessing is the exact style he’s going for. He’s not shaved in a day or so, leaving the lightest blond scruff on his jaw, and he looks more relaxed than the last time we met. Maybe the relaxed part is because he’s not in the middle of a pretty brutal confrontation.

I let him pull me to the trivia area, not talking or even looking at me, box in hand. The woman who was at the door dressed like Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas is there, chatting with a tall, thin guy wearing glasses. I remember him from last time because Brynn thought he was cute too. He hands the box to Sally, who I think is actually Nora, but she may be Sally in my head forever now. I look around the trivia area where people are trickling in, taking seats with team names, and chatting to create a murmur of voices.

“Rory, this is Nora. She’s the majority owner of Words for Nerds, and this is Simon. He worked with me at Cover to Cover for a while; now he’s an app designer at MLC next door.” I fist bump them and smile. It takes me a full five seconds to realize that MLC means Marshall Law Comics.

“You’ve been here before.” Simon tips his head to look at me.

“Yeah, few months ago,” I answer tentatively. Of course, Jake remembers me, but why would this guy?

“September fourth. You had a friend with you.” Simon stares a second longer and looks away. I nod slowly and look to Jake for help. His jaw is clenched tight, and he’s staring at Simon like he wants to murder him.

“You freaked her out.” Nora looks at my face, and I try to relax my features, but I don’t think it works. “He has a crazy good memory. Think Sheldon Cooper when you’re talking to him.” Nora rolls her eyes, and I nod, still a little freaked out.
